Der englischsprachige Report stellt eines der Hauptergebnisse des SIBIS-Projekts (Statistical Indicators Benchmarking the Information Society) dar, das die Europäische Gemeinschaft im Rahmen des IST-Programms (Information Society Technology Programme) von 1998 bis 2002 gefördert hat.

Im Kapitel 1 Executive Summary wird der Bedarf an aktuellen Daten über die Informationsgesellschaft wie innovative IT-Unterstützung bei der Arbeit, Telearbeit, IT-Kenntnisse und -Fähigkeiten, Beschäftigungszahlen im IT-Sektor etc. begründet. Die vorliegenden Ergebnisse sollen den Einblick in diese Sachverhalte in der EU über neu entwickelte und abgestimmte Kennzahlen verbessern.

Vier Bereiche werden unterschieden und -in dieser Beschreibung beispielhaft- mit Kennzahlen vorgestellt:

1. Skills in the Information Society (Aufgabenbezogene Schulung; Nutzung von e-learning; Zugang von Mitarbeitern zu e-mail, Internet und Intranet)

2. Work organisation in the Information Society (Management by objectives; Formen von Telearbeit; Tele-Heimarbeit; mobile Telearbeit; Tele-Kooperation)

3. Outcomes of employment wie Arbeitszufriedenheit, Balance zwischen Arbeit und Familie u.Ä.

4. Structure of IT-related employment
